Intel’s beast 18-core CPU

expected to release in the coming weeks (Q2 July 2017) may be the fastest consumer grade processor available to the public as of the publication date of this article. With computation speeds in the teraflops, multi-tasking applications like video editing, 3d rendering, and even audio composing should no longer hinder performance. However, this performance does not come cheap – this is no exaggeration. The MSRP of this monster will net you $1999 before taxes. Thankfully, Intel does scale down for those who would like a cheaper variant, (refer to chart below)

Here is a look at some of the i9 CPUs:

  • 7980 XE 18 Cores /36 threads  $1,999
  • 7960 X 16 Cores /32 threads $1,699
  • 7940 X 14 Cores /28 threads $1,399
  • 7920 X 12 Cores /24 threads $1,199

But what does that mean for our older CPUs?

Price drops

Usually with the release of a new generation products, we should hopefully see a trend of price drops for previous generations like the i7 6700T processor (Est. Value 303.00).

The average consumer probably won’t need the latest and greatest hardware, especially if they’re not into mega tasking to the extreme. Does that suggest that the i9 X series has a very niched consumer market? What do you think?
