"Virtual Reality lets you view the world as it could be" -

The Oculus Go was announced today (10/11/2017) advertised as the “sweet spot” between mobile Gear VR and tethered VR (HTC Vive and Oculus Rift). It is an all in one device to feature its own hardware, LCD, audio board and software bundled together with a controller much like Samsung's Wireless Controller. That means no PC or Phone required to use!

Here are the details of the headset as we know so far.

  • $199 at launch
  • Full Mobile computer inside the headset
  • Lens are Next Generation to the Rifts Lens
  • WQHD Resolution, Fast Switch LCD Optimized for VR (2560 x 1440, 1280 x 720 per eye)
  • Built in Spatial Audio, with optional 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Developers for Gear VR and Oculus Go share the same platform (when developing for one, you're also developing for the other, "Binary Compadiblity)
  • Devkits available in November of 2017

There are a lot of questions that come in mind when considering the price point set for the go – What are it's technical specs? Is it just a glorified Gear VR? I personally believe that Samsung did a successful job in being the primary adapter for mobile VR technology – but, could this be Mark Zuckerberg’s way to stray away from the Samsung Partnership?

One of my primary complaints of my Gear VR is how quickly some phones can overheat over a period of time, including long term comfort. It will be interesting to see where they take this new headset after going through several iterations of mobile VR head mounted displays. It’s also likely that the Go will contain its own power source – so I’m looking forward to no longer relying on my phones current battery to use my VR headset!

The Oculus Go is set to release early 2018
