Huawei's CEO delivers an unscripted, heartfelt letter to his consumers (CES 2018)

EDITED BY LISA A.

I was sitting close to the front of the stage while Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei (pronounced Hwa-Way)expressed his deep concern to his consumers about 50 minutes into his keynote speech. The screen behind him faded to blue, and the words “ Something I want to share” slowly appeared in white. I was confused at first, thinking that this was part of Huawei's one-hour keynote speech. I never saw Mr. Yu's head face the teleprompter at the bottom of the stage. That's when I realized that this wasn't part of his presentation. This part of his speech he was talking to everyone, but addressing each of us individually.

Before you read on, I should note that AT&T's deal to carry the Huawei Mate Pro 10 and other products had been dropped shortly before the trade show. I'd imagine their partnership was to be announced during this press conference, but ultimately had gone sour. Mr. Yu is expressing his confidence behind his products, about how his company has earned global trust as being one of the top smart phone manufactures.

It seems like it's only in the U.S. that we don't recognize the company too much.

Here is a snippet of that speech.

“Now people are waiting for me to talk about our partnerships , but many of you guys have seen the newspapers and saw that something has happened. Unfortunately, at this time we cannot sell this phone through carrier stores (meaning you can't select this phone in a contract, or get any bundled deals with them). You can purchase this phone on the open market, just like last year's model.

Everyone knows in the U.S. market, over 90% of the smartphones were sold by carrier channels –

In Huawei we have the best technology and best innovation. And last year we had very good consumer feedback after we launched our old product in CES 2017.

The Mate10 Pro is much better than last year's model.

It's a big loss for us, and for them.

but the biggest loss is for the consumers.

The consumers won't have the best choices in the market.

(he was more-so referring to not having consumers have a good variety of phones to choose from)

[audience claps]

Many people don't know that I've been with Huawei for 25 years now. I've witnessed our company grow from a very small one, to one of the largest telecommunications suppliers in the world. Not only the largest, but the strongest one.

Also, I was one of the first to start with Huawei mobile infrastructure network and R&D...

with one other person and myself – That was over 24 years ago.

All of my memories of back then were very difficult. Because we weren't even trusted by the Chinese market – we were newcomers, it's always very hard. But we won the trust of the Chinese carriers, we won the trust of the emerging market, and the respect of developers, and even won the trust of the global network, Europe – Japan – serving over 7 billion people world wide!

The last 30 years we proved our quality, We proved our security and privacy protection. We proved that we have the quality and leading technology and innovation. We've proved it! At Huawei we believe in working hard, and we're dedicated to our employees and dedicated to our work. Our founder and CEO told me to be customer focused. I remember joining the company 25 years ago , barely a university graduate – he taught us that first and foremost, we're a customer driven company, and 2nd be dedicated to our work.

We put a lot of our money into technology and innovation

[because] we are loyal to our customers and our consumers.

We won the trust of our global customers

I remember 6 years ago when I took over as CEO, Our smartphones weren't anything – no one knew our brand. 6 years later we're the top 3 smartphone suppliers in the world and quickly growing.

Our technology is getting stronger and stronger and I have the highest confidence that we will be the best in the world.

We have a passion to do more. I do believe the consumer will select Huawei,

Carriers will select Huawei – They need Huawei.

Huawei can bring more value to them – To the carriers, and more importantly to the consumers, the end users.

Ladies and Gentlemen thank you very much,

Thank you for Coming.“
