CONFIRMED: Apple slows down older phones deliberately

First,  Check out Apples Official Statement;

“Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.

Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.”

Translation:

As phones get older, batteries begin to degrade and can no longer supply the same amount of power at first purchase. Users have reported their phones randomly shutting off, which is a result of owning an old, failing battery. For the best possible customer experience, they’ve decided to throttle or slow down the phone to prevent issues like this from occurring.

Overall, they would prefer to maximize your experience at the cost of performance.

Because which is worse?

Having a stable slower phone, or having your phone randomly shut off.

(Imagine if you really needed to use your phone during an emergency.)

Some would argue it’s a ploy to buy new devices every few years – while others suggest in replacing the battery yourself.

If you still have a warranty with apple and suspect the battery may be going out you may want to consider having them replace it for you. Just a warning, If you’re tech savvy enough to DIY or use a 3rd party vendor, Apple would probably never look at your phone ever again.

Who does this effect?

These “optimizations” only effect iPhone 6, 6S, SE, and 7 at the moment but we should be seeing these updates rolled out to all generation phones. The community response obviously is a bit negative, but its technically something you’ve already agreed to by clicking so in their Terms of Service.

Do you think that Apple should have given its users a choice?

Why do phones randomly shut down with bad batteries?

I love using analogies!

Imagine if you’re in first gear driving in front of a school zone.

Suddenly,

your car revs extremely high to over 9,000 RPMs.

Your automatic transmission system, shuts down your car to prevent any damage to any of the cars components.

These random spikes happen as the battery is discharging, thus triggering an automatic safety shutdown. This issue isn’t just limited to Apple products though.

If your phone is randomly shutting off, you may too be affected by a bad battery – whether you own an Android device or a Blackberry.

Aftermath :Now what?

Lawsuits are being filed from apple customers describing their practice as deceptive and immoral. Another asking for compensation for failing to release this information to the public – and because of not keeping with company brand.

The next move is on Apple. How will they respond to the public out roar?
